Ceramics and Art Class
The Utah Council of the Blind offers a weekly ceramics class for individuals to gain self-confidence, express themselves artistically, and to be active in their communities by socializing while working with their hands. The Utah State Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired generously allows us to use a room in their building for these classes.
The projects that this class has created have been placed in the Utah State Fair with high awards and donated to the Festival of Trees to raise funds for Primary Children's Hospital. The individuals who participate in this class love to attend each week and have built many friendships and a great support system.
The Ceramics Class has expanded to include other arts and crafts in addition to ceramics. Due to COVID-driven restrictions, class sizes are severely limited, so, in order to participate, it is necessary to make appointments in advance with Gerrie Mills. She can be reached at 801-803-8070.
Ceramics Class Schedule
It is necessary to make appointments in advance with Gerrie Mills. She can be reached at 801-803-8070.
This class is open to any blind or visually impaired person in the state of Utah and is currently being held on Wednesdays at the Utah State Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 250 N 1950 W, Salt Lake City, in room 301 from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Classes are available 40 weeks of the year. The class will be taking a break in the month of November and December, at the discretion of the instructor.
The attendees of this program only pay the cost of the materials needed to complete the projects they choose to make and a $2 per month breakage fee. We have obtained Grants to pay for the cost of the instructor.
We have an instructor who comes to us with many years of experience working with ceramics. She is excited to share some of the knowledge she has and will be offering mini instructional classes on handmade beads, pinch pots, and Lladro painting techniques, as well as the traditional painting of ceramics of the students' choice.
If a student does not wish to participate in the mini-classes, they are still welcome to come and work on their own personal projects.
