It is hard to believe that we are gearing up for elections already. This will begin the busy part of the year. In September we have elections; October, the Health and Information Fair; and December the Christmas party. It has been a slow year as far as activities, but a challenging year in many other ways. I am looking forward to seeing what the next couple of years will bring for the UCB.
In my life, there are new trials. I am thinking of this time as a growing period. There are times when our life can seem overwhelming, but it is rewarding to handle each new adventure that we face. This is a time when I can put many of the alternative techniques that I use to work. It is also when I learn new ones. Some of them I will share as we go along. I remember someone telling me once that we must eat an elephant one bite at a time. This is how Rick and I are handling each day. There are days when it seems so difficult to handle, but we just keep looking for new ways to manage each situation.
My hope for this time in my life is that it will help me to have the compassion and the understanding of the situations all of you may be in. We are all in different places in our lives, but I feel that this will help me be even more of an asset to the Utah Council of the Blind. I do need to let everyone know that I am here for you, but if I forget to return your calls right away, please feel free and call me back. We do get busy with chemo treatments and trying to keep Rick healthy, and I do forget. I appreciate your patience during this time.

We are going to have an activity on August 17, 2019 riding tandem bikes. You can bring your own or your guide driver can bring their own, if you have a guide, and friends, family and neighbors are welcome. We will be meeting at the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 250 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City, Utah at 8:15 a.m. We will be riding bikes along the Jordan River bike trail starting at the Fisher Mansion, which is 1206 West 200 South and riding to 1180 West 1700 South and then riding back to the mansion. We will start riding at 9:00 a.m. and end at 11:00 a.m. and take a break with refreshments and drinks. We will wrap up the activity at 11:30 a.m. Please let us know in your reservation whether you will have your own ride or whether you need one and how many are coming in your group along with you. There will be a small cost to cover the activity of $5 per person to cover the activity and you will need to have your guide pay or pay for your own on or before no later than August 3, 2019 to ensure we have enough bikes, refreshments and drinks and helpers to help assist in whatever is needed. It is crucial to let us know this information in a timely manner so we can properly plan ahead. Please call and reserve with Tina Terry at 801-245-9264 or send your checks to UCB, PO Box 1415, Bountiful Utah, 84011-1415 as soon as possible to ensure you have a spot. Again, please let us know if you will be bringing your own bike or if someone will need to assist you with a guide, bike or transportation. You can also leave your information along with questions by calling the Utah connection at 801-299-0670. We Look forward to seeing you there!

The UCB has scholarships available for outstanding students seeking higher education. If you are attending a Utah university, college or trade school, or if you know of someone who might be eligible, please contact the Utah Connection 1-800-273-4569 or 801-299-0670 to request an application. All applications and required documentation will due by September 1st, 2019. They can be mailed, emailed or faxed. However, the transcripts must be mailed to the UCB, PO Box 1415, Bountiful, UT 84011-1415. Students should have a GPA of at least 3.0 to compete. Scholarship funding can be used for tuition, housing, or books. If an individual receives a scholarship, a report is required describing the use of the funds. Scholarships will be presented at the Annual Business Meeting on September 21, 2019.
It is nearly time for the Utah State Fair. Once again, the UCB plans to attend with those members who have an interest. You and your guide may attend for only $1.00 each and access all the entertainment and special events provided on that day. Currently the UCB plans to attend the Fair on Monday, September 9th, at 6:00 pm. It is important that everyone gather at the main gate on 1000 West in the middle of the Fair Park parking lot (North Side Entrance) at 5:30 to enter at 6:00 p.m. If you are late you will not be able enter with the discount. The UCB has also been invited to attend the Circus performance, which is held on Wednesday, the 11th of September. Please meet by 9:30 a.m. to participate in this event. You are encouraged to read the newsletters or listen to the Utah Connection for possible dates, times and meeting point changes, since we are subject to the direction of the Fair Park. Generally, children 11 and younger are free on Monday. Rides on Monday are often buy- one-all-you-can-ride wrist band and get one free. On Wednesday, refreshments maybe served prior to the Circus performance. Children’s rides are often free on Wednesday. Although you do not need to prepay, reservations are requested so we can inform the fair park of the numbers attending.
The Utah Council of the Blind will be hosting a Health and Information Fair on Friday, October 18th. Lunch will be provided at a cost of $5.00 per person. We will begin at 9:00 a.m. with announcements. The event will cover topics such as emergency management, fire safety, self-defense, stress management, and health management. There will be some general sessions, as well as breakout sessions. We are also hoping to have LS&S Products here to display some of their products as well as other vendors. This will end about 5:00 p.m.
Please join us at DSVBI, 250 N 1950 W. There will be door prizes and a lot of good information. If you would like to know more, please call Tina Terry at 801-245-9264.

In November we will be holding a “getting to know you” activity with games, lunch, and fun at the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 250 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City Utah and it will be held in the multipurpose room. This will help kick off our membership drive and you are encouraged to invite people young and old to join and become a member or just attend the activities. More information on the exact time and date in upcoming newsletters.
As you are aware, in the past few years changes have been made to braille which significantly alter reading and writing grade 2 braille. The UCB has a braille reference sheet including the new changes to the braille code (UEB) in a brief braille document. This document is 11 by 11.5 inches and 16 pages with braille on both sides of the sheet. It is spiral bound and can be kept for reference. It lists the signs and symbols, including the new punctuation and the portion of the braille code which has not changed. If you would like a free copy of this material, leave your name, phone number, and address on the Utah Connection 801-299-0670 or 800-273-4569, and we will send it to you.
We have several braille items that are looking for homes. There are still some cookbooks in the office and a complete set of the LDS Scriptures available. If anyone is interested, please give Tina a call at: 801-245-9264. Please feel free to drop by the office on Wednesday afternoons and browse the cookbooks to see if there are some that you would like.
Many of you have elected to use the UCB Driver/Guide portion of the transportation program. As you know, this program is especially for members of the UCB. Individuals who take advantage of this program live in all parts of the state. It is particularly helpful when other transportation resources are not available. Many of those living in the rural areas find it necessary to get to doctors, stores, and community events. The individual must identify a driver/guide who is willing to transport them in exchange for mileage reimbursement. Each month a member can purchase up to 300 miles worth of driver guide coupons for .15 cents a mile or $45.00 for the full 300 miles. These coupons are given to the driver/guide along with a mileage log form to report the distance traveled in order to receive reimbursement. The UCB will reimburse 50 cents per mile each mile traveled. This means that the driver guide may receive up to $150.00 for providing the full 300 miles of transportation. To order these coupons you may send a check, along with a note describing the number of miles needed, your name, and address, to the UCB, PO Box 1415, Bountiful, UT 84011-1415 or you may order by credit card by calling Tina Terry at 801-245-9264. The coupons, along with the forms, will be mailed to you. You are the driver/guide’s supervisor, and you are responsible to provide the coupons and form to the driver/guide. Remember, these coupons can be carried over to following months, because they do not expire.
Do you have trouble getting your mail read? Is it almost impossible to deal with the volumes of print materials that enter your home? Are there special items that you would like to read, but cannot read the print? The UCB has developed a Reader Program to help with this problem. If you have someone who will read these materials for you, the UCB can provide a small stipend to reward them for this service. As a member of the UCB you are eligible to purchase reader coupons for up to 10 hours per month for only $20.00. These coupons are for you to give to the reader to be redeemed from the UCB for $5.00 an hour. This means that the reader can receive up to $50 a month for helping you with your mail and other print literature. This provides you the means to give a thank you to those individuals who kindly help by reading. If you are interested in this program, contact the Utah Connection 1-800-273-4569 or 801-299-0670 and leave your name and phone number so we can contact you. These coupons can be purchased by credit card.

SUBJECT
: NLS name changes October 1
NLS
is pleased to announce that we have received final approval from the Librarian
of Congress to change our name. This move will help us address the use of
outdated language in our current name and more clearly communicate the breadth
of those we serve. Beginning on October 1, our name will change officially to
“National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled,” though we will
continue to be referred to by the abbreviation NLS.
Both
NLS and Library of Congress sought input on this change from stakeholder groups
and gathered data through various public channels. In keeping with the
strategic plan of the LOC, our new name is patron-centric. Visit https://www.loc.gov/strategic-plan/ to learn more about the
Library’s “user-centered” goal in the strategic plan.
We have already taken the first steps in our name-change implementation plan to ensure the transition goes smoothly. If you have questions or concerns about the name change, please feel free to contact us.

2 beaten eggs
3/4 cup soft bread crumbs, 1 slice (I like to use rolled oats instead)
1/2 cup tomato juice
8 thin slices of ham (cooked)
2 Tbsp. snipped parsley
1/2 tsp. dried oregano, crushed
1/4 tsp. each salt and pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
2 lbs. lean ground beef
6 oz. mozzarella cheese, shredded
2 medium cans of tomato sauce
1 pkg. spaghetti sauce mix
Combine eggs, crumbs, juice, parsley, oregano, salt, pepper and garlic. Add beef and mix well. On waxed paper or foil, pat meat to a 12 by 10-inch rectangle. Arrange ham atop meat. Using paper to lift edges, roll up and seal the edges. Place seam side down in 9 by 13-inch pan. Mix tomato sauce with spaghetti sauce mix. Mix well and pour over the top of rolled meat. Bake at 350 degree for 1-1/4 hours until done.
Sprinkle the cheese on top of cooked meat roll, then return back to the oven for 5 minutes longer until cheese is melted.
