I hope you all had a wonderful and safe July. I loved all the celebrations that we get to participate in. I love the parades, carnivals, firework displays and family gatherings with all the hamburgers and hot dogs you can consume. I am so proud to be an American. The freedoms we share are many.

I have been having fun getting to know our new Facebook page a little better. If you have not had a chance check it out, you will find lots of fun and useful information on this page, and I want to thank all those who have been posting and sharing with us.

I am very much looking forward to our activity in August (Cove Fort). Read more about it in this issue and get your reservations in ASAP.

UCB Annual Business Meeting

The Annual Business Meeting of the Utah Council of the Blind will be held at the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 250 N 1950 W, Salt Lake City, UT at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2016. Reservations are required so that we can have enough food for everyone. Please call the Utah Connection or email ucb.board@gmail.com with your name, the names of others in your party, and your telephone number no later than Monday, September 12th. When you make your reservation, please indicate whether or not each person in your party is a member of the UCB, whether you use large print or braille, any dietary restrictions you or a member of your party may have, and if you will need a listening device or any other accommodation.

Membership Verification: In order to vote at the annual business meeting a member’s dues for 2016 must be paid no later than September 10, 2016. Join Us at the State Fair

Once again we are excited to announce that the UCB will be sponsoring opportunities to spend a day at the Utah State Fair on September 13 and 14. Those wishing to attend on Tuesday, September 13, will need to show up at the east gate facing 1000 E and North Temple at 5:30 p.m. We will all enter together. You are entitled to a guide. Everyone will pay $1 for entrance. You can enjoy the fair through closing time.

This year again, the UCB is sponsoring a second day at the fair, this one during the daytime on Wednesday, September 14. Meet at the east gate facing 1000 E and North temple at 9:30 a.m. Rides and refreshments will be free from 10:00-12:00 a.m. Everyone needs to enter together and must pay $1 for each person. We are not certain if the circus will be included this year, so pay attention to the Utah Connection for more information.

Reservations are needed for both events so that we do not enter the fair without you. Anyone coming after the group enters misses out on the discount price. Both events are fun, and you can attend both if you wish, but it is mandatory that you make reservations, since the fair people require us to give them a count. If you do not have a reservation, you cannot enter with the group. To assure your reservation, send $1 per person to: UCB, PO Box 1415, Bountiful, UT 84011-1415.

News from the UCB Ceramics Class

A new teacher, Gerrie Smith, has started working with the ceramics class. Gerrie will be starting some new and exciting classes to introduce interested participants to new ideas. The classes are all free, but you will need to pay for your own materials. All classes happen on Wednesdays and are held at DSBVI, 250 N 1950 W, Suite B. Salt Lake City. Below is a list of planned classes with dates and times:

• Aug. 3, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Beginning glazed beads: beads created by hand out of clay. Formed, fired and glazed.

Book Review: The Amish Groom

DB79235 by Mindy Starns Clark and Susan Meissner. Reading time: 9 hours, 23 minutes.

Read by Gregory Maupin.

This beautifully written and thought provoking novel grabs the reader with a unique point of view. The authors give readers a new twist with a male perspective in this delicious Amish romance that also deals with mystery, rejection, restlessness, reconnection, and forgiveness.

Twenty-three year-old Tyler wants to marry longtime girlfriend Rachel who is a baptized member of the Amish faith and who will only marry another baptized member. But he is hesitant to join the Amish church because of his connection to his Englisch family in California. Years earlier, Tyler’s Amish mother Sadie left the family farm and married an Englischer. Sadie died when Tyler was 6 years old, and his Englischer father, a member of the military, sent Tyler to live with his Amish grandparents, where he grew up in the Amish community surrounded by loving relatives. But he feels uncertainty about choosing his Amish family over his Englisch family.

Now Tyler has the unexpected opportunity to go to California to house sit and be with his younger brother while his father and stepmother take a trip. He starts photography lessons with Lark, an attractive girl who is a year or so older than him. But he still feels out of place. It’s as if he doesn’t belong in either world.

And while he is trying to figure out his path forward, he can’t help but wonder if his Amish girlfriend, Rachel, will wait for him to return. Is Rachel being tempted to stray by some other Amish man? Can Tyler resist the attraction to the friendly California Englischer girls? Will he decide to return to Lancaster County or will he stay in California? Will he remain Amish or go back to the Englisch way of life?

This book paints a captivating picture of Tyler straddling the Amish and Englischer worlds, a dilemma like those which have probably touched the lives of each of us in one way or another. He questions whether his mother felt the Amish life was not “enough” for her and he worries that he will come to feel the same way. To move forward, he needs to discover why his mother left the Amish community.

As a side note, I have often wondered, as a blind person, why one picture of a specific object is better than another picture of the same thing. I have asked a few times, but never received any answers that clarified things for me. In Tyler's photography lessons, there is a discussion of taking pictures and what may make one picture better than another.

Just Scheduled: Activity for January 2017

Our first activity in 2017 will be a snowshoeing event in January with Splore. This activity will be limited in numbers, somewhere between 10 and 18, depending on how many volunteers we take with us. The cost for this activity will be $10 per person and will include transportation and snowshoeing paraphernalia. So, MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

Below are four questions and a bonus question to test your perception, reasoning and the quickness of your logical processing. They are stated simply so you should try to answer them instantly.

To assure the accuracy of the results, you should not take your time, but instead, answer each of them immediately. OK? Let's find out just how clever you really are ...

The UCB is investigating new formats to provide recorded materials for those who cannot read print or braille. Cassettes are becoming a thing of the past, so the UCB is looking for the means to serve you in another manner. Please let us know if you can listen to an audio CD. Can you use a thumb drive on your library machine? Can you receive e-mails? is it possible for you to use some other form of communication. We need your help to plan for the future. Leave your name and phone number on the Utah Connection so we can talk to you about your resources for accessing the newsletter.

Amazon then contributes a small percentage of most of your purchase to the charity of your choice. The easiest way to set the UCB as your charity of choice is as follows:

· Go to www.smile.amazon.com and login as you normally would.
Activate the “Your Account” link

· Arrow down or use a links list to find “Change Your Charity”

· Go down to the form field (just before the search button) and type in “Utah Council of the Blind”

· Tab to the “Search” button and press the spacebar

· In the Results you will see “Utah Council of the Blind”, tab to the “Select” button immediately following it and press the spacebar.

· A pop-up window opens telling you that your purchases will now support “Utah Council of the Blind”

Smith’s Rewards

First, you must have a Smith’s rewards card. If you do not have this card, ask for one at a checkout or service desk when you are at Smith’s. For those of you who use your rewards cards to earn gasoline discounts, be aware that the Community Rewards do not affect those discounts at all. You will still be able to accumulate fuel points as before.

Second, you must have registered the card online. To do this, go to www.smithsfoodanddrug.com, follow the link to register and fill out the form with your email address, a password you create, your home store, etc.

To assign the UCB as your charitable organization:

· Sign in to your Smith’s account

· Open the “My Account” page if it does not take you there automatically

· Look for “Community Rewards” near the end of the page, find “Edit” below it, and activate that

· On the search page that opens, below “Find your Organization” you can type either our number, which is “32989”, or “Utah Council of the Blind”

· Tab to “Search” and activate that

· Go down to the results, find the checkbox in front of “Utah Council of the Blind”, and press the spacebar
